Earth Day is a time to reflect on our impact on the environment and to educate ourselves on better conservation practices. At Giroud Tree and Lawn, we make every effort to be Earth conscious. We also partner with other like-minded companies so we can decrease our carbon footprint while beautifying our client's properties.
The Giroud crew does tree work all over Bucks and Montgomery Counties and parts of Philadelphia. From light pruning to large tree removals, our crews clean up the debris and put as much as possible through our chippers to leave our customers’ properties spotless after the job. But, where do all those wood chips go after that after they are loaded into our trucks?
From Deadwood to Mulch
Giroud works with Britton Industries to give tree waste new life! Britton recycles all that debris into beautiful mulch, which is then used to help other trees live long, healthy lives! Giroud values the partnership with Britton Industries not only because they recycle, but also because Britton recycles responsibly! According to their website, “Britton Industries … utilizes the latest green technology, with brand new high volume electric grinders that virtually eliminate emissions and greatly decreases our environmental impact.”
Mulch Gives Lifesaving Protection to Trees
Homeowners can find that same mulch recycled by Britton at local garden centers! Primex Garden Center in Glenside carries Britton’s Black Mulch, so these same local trees are protecting other local trees. Primex customers can come with their own trucks to pick up mulch, or they offer delivery services (depending on distance) of bagged or bulk mulch.
If you want someone else to do the heavy work, a Giroud Arborist will do a FREE evaluation of your property to assess your mulching needs and our crew will spread the mulch for you. Giroud follows important industry standards for proper mulching so you can be sure your property not only looks beautiful but it’s safe and healthy, too!
Why Proper Mulching is Important
There are many great reasons to mulch around trees. The Arbor Day Foundation outlines the many benefits on their website, explaining that mulch insulates the soil, retains water to keep the tree roots moist, prevents weeds and protects from soil compaction. If done properly, mulching can add to a long and healthy life for your trees!
However, improper mulching can cause problems for your trees! If mulch is too thin, it doesn’t add much value. More importantly, if mulch is placed too close to the tree trunk, you could be doing more damage than good!
Improper mulching leads to:
- Cutting off Moisture to the Root Ball – If mulch is piled over the root ball or too close to the tree trunk, it can actually block much needed water from reaching the root system.
- Girdling Roots – tree roots will grow up into the mulch and wrap around the bottom of the trunk. Over time, these roots can actually strangle the tree and, in severe cases, kill it.
- Decay and Rot –If your tree is infected, decaying, or rotting at the trunk base, it needs to be addressed immediately. Oftentimes, these early warning signs of decay can be hidden beneath too much mulch, which leads to big problems for your tree!
According to the University of Florida, homeowners should “keep mulch about 12 to 18 inches from the trunk for any size of tree.” If you want to be sure that your trees are mulched properly, have an ISA Certified Arborist and professional crew do the job for you!
